GLENVILLE, W.V. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College wrestling team opened its season on Saturday at the Glenville State Open. The Panthers finished 11
th and saw
Matthew Velasco and
Cade Johnson each place in the event contested at the Waco Center in West Virginia.
Velasco opened-up his sophomore campaign at 141 pounds with a major decision over Malikai Badillo from Glenville State. He then had to work extra time in the second round, but won a sudden victory over Aidan Micheli from Millersville. After being bumped into the consolation bracket after his quarterfinal match. Velasco won two of his next three matches to place seventh overall, including a tech fall, and decision.
Cade Johnson received an opening round bye and lost his first match of the day. Johnson bounced back with three straight wins which including a major and tech fall to get to the consolation semifinals. Johnson exited in the bracket after a loss in the seventh-place match.
Other notable performances were from
Gavyn Uribes at heavyweight. Uribes earned a sudden victory in the consolation third round before falling in the second period to Mason Mustain from Ashland in the fourth round.
Glenville State won the team title with 227 points. Millersville was second with 146.5. Great Midwest rivals Ashland and Findlay finished third and seven respectively. The Panthers scored 22.5 points to place 11
thoverall.
Wesleyan will travel to McKendree on Wednesday night for a dual with McKendree. The match is scheduled for 7 PM.
