CRESTVIEW HEIGHTS, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's soccer team had their season come to an end on Saturday afternoon in the Great Midwest Conference Tournament. The Panthers fell 5-1 to Thomas More University in the G-MAC Quarterfinals.
The Panthers making their first appearance in the G-MAC Tournament since the Spring of 2020 where all championships were conducted in the Spring. It also marks the first Fall Championship appearance since 2014 for the program. Wesleyan finished the season with an 8-5-6 record, solidifying back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 40 years of program history. The Panthers last had back-to-back winning seasons in 1983 and 1984.
Playing in November for the first time since 2014, the Saints blitz the Panthers in the opening period. In the 15
th minute, the first goal of the match hit the right post of the Panthers' goal and ricocheted to the left and into the corner of the net. Thomas More scored three times in a five-minute span and took a 3-0 lead into intermission. The Saints took 10 shots in the first 45 minutes to the Panthers' three.
Wesleyan made defensive changes in the second period which slowed the Saints attack. TMU added goals in the 56
th and 65
th minute to increase their lead. The Panthers broke through in the 81
st minute as
Arthur Hill found
Calum Newson over the top. The Saints' goalkeeper was caught too far away from his net and Newson lofted a shot over his head and into the center of the net.
Matteo Napoletano finished the game with three shots, two on goal. Hill made three saves.
Wesleyan featured a group of fifth year seniors who saw 10 wins combine through their first three seasons. That same group helped redirect the trajectory of the program by accumulating 16 wins over the past two season.
