Day of Camp – 2
Two linebackers that received All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference honors last season return to this year's roster in Kyle Hurt and Jalen Humphrey, both being named All-G-MAC Honorable Mention.
Humphrey led the Panthers in tackles last season with 64 including 42 solo. He also recorded one sack and forced one fumble. Hurt finished the season with 60 tackles, 3.5 for loss and one forced fumble. Of his 60 tackles, 28 were unassisted.
"Kyle and Jalen have done a tremendous job of buying into the culture in which we have been establishing on defense. I'm very pleased with their leadership and willingness to do whatever it takes for the team to be successful," said Defensive Coordinator Tyrone Young. "With both of them being All-Conference players that are returning, I expect them to have a major impact this season."
Junior Devyn Bledsoe and sophomore Josh Thompson also return to the lineup. Bledsoe ranked third on the team with 2.5 sacks last season in addition to 35 tackles.
Junior Jalen Wilson will make the transition from defensive back to linebacker this season.
"In our scheme Jalen will play a great roll with his length and athleticism. He has tremendous range and has the ability to see things naturally and makes a lot of plays from his position," commented Young.
The linebacker position features six new faces in Carlis Falls-Wells, Asher Spivey, Dylan Whitt, Austin Mitchell, Tyler Edwards and Emilio Arispe.
"We have an extremely talented group of young guys who will be joining us this fall," noted Young. Redshirt freshman transfer Carlis Falls-Wells is expected to make a big impact at our Rover position, he has a tremendous nose for the football and is a very quick learner. Freshman Asher Spivey is someone to keep an eye on as the season progresses. I'm very excited to see this group produce and make a lot of plays this year."
