OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College Department of Athletics will embark on a new journey this season with a "Panthers Go Green" initiative to significantly reduce its impact on the environment. The Department of Athletics will be phasing out traditional printed publications and begin to take advantage of technological advancements while cutting out a significant source of waste.
During the 2016-17 season alone, Kentucky Wesleyan printed over 24,200 game day programs, equating to nearly 50,000 sheets of paper. By reducing the number of printed publications, the department will be able to reduce its burden on the environment.
In lieu of the traditional printed game day programs, the publications will be available online as well as at contests, accessible via a Quick Response code reader, or QR code. Fans can download a free QR code reader app, and will be able to scan a QR code at the venue entrance to view the game day program.
Fans can also access the programs on KWCPanthers.com via the sports respective schedule. Programs will be posted at least 24 hours ahead of the scheduled contest. Programs are also accessible via KWCPanthers.com/programs.
The NCAA also supports the environmental sustainability movement of all of their member institutions, and strives to enact green practices themselves. In 2015-2016 the NCAA went paperless at Championships, with all the NCAA Championship media guides available only online.
The 2017 fall season will act as a test run for this initiative. Adjustments will be made for the winter and spring seasons if necessary.
