GLENVILLE, WV. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College wrestling team opened its season on the road at the Pioneer Open hosted by Glenville State. The Panthers finished 11
th overall, but it was the performance by
Nolan McKelvy, who finished sixth at 174 pounds, that was the highlight.
Gavyn Uribes also had a productive day at heavyweight while
Drayden McKerrow finished the day 2-2 at 197 pounds.
McKelvy started the day with a bye and a 5-3 decision over Christin Arrington from Belmont Abbey. McKelvy lost in the quarterfinals, but bounced right back by pinning Hayden Flynn of Ashland early in the second period. Arrington worked his way back through the consolation bracket to face McKelvy again in the consolation semifinals. This time around, McKelvy shutout Arrington 5-0. In the fifth-place match, John Reho from Frostburg State got the better of McKelvy winning a 16-9 decision.
Uribes finished an impressive afternoon in the consolation bracket with three pins. In the second round, Uribes pinned Earl Wyman from Fairmont State in the second period. Uribes suffered his first loss in the third round, but Uribes pinned Kurt Scheuerman and Avery Kuhns, both from Millersville, in the next two rounds. In the consolation sixth round, Tyler Wise of Fairmont State won a 11-2 decision over Uribes.
McKerrow finished his day 2-2 at 197-pounds with a pin.
Larson Pilant earned a victory against two losses at 133 pounds.
The host Pioneers won the team title over Belmont Abbey and Frostburg State. The University of Indianapolis was fourth.
The Panthers will host the University of Findlay on Saturday to open Great Midwest action. The match at Jones Gymnasium is scheduled to start at 12PM.
