WESLEY CHAPEL, FL - The Kentucky Wesleyan Women's Golf team opened up their spring campaign this past weekend, taking sixth at the Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff hosted by Walsh University. They improved their score each day (347-346-342) to finish in sixth with a score of 1,035 (+171).
Marian University took the team title with a score of 937 (+73), while Mariah's Mackendzie Dresbaugh won medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 231 (+15).
Senior
Maddie Zimmerman started her final semester off with a bang, shooting a career best 54-hole score of 247 (+31). Despite tough and windy conditions, she shot scores of 84-82-81 to tie for 16th out of 50 golfers. Her consistancy was a key factor in those scores, as she finished tied for fourth in total pars (28) and tied for second in par-5 average (5.00, E).
Avery Shacklette and
Megan Bryan finished right next to each other, as Shacklette totalled a 263 (+47) to take 28th, while Bryan was just one stroke behind, finishing in a tie for 29th with a 264 (+48). Bryan had one of just two eagles in the entire tournament field, as she eagled the par-5 seventh hole in her first round.
Rounding out the scoring for the Panthers were
Samantha DeSpain and
Audrey Koetter, who each finished within one stroke of each other. DeSpain came in 32nd with a 270 (+54), while Keotter tied for the fourth best par-3 average (3.50, +6) in the tournament and finished with a 271 (+55), putting her in 33rd place.
The Panthers will be back at it again next weekend when they stay in state to compete in the SVSU Spring Intercollegiate, held at the Cherry Blossom Golf Club in Georgetown, Ky. The tournament will take place on Saturday-Sunday, March 16-17.
