OWENSBORO, KY - The future is bright in the 'Boro. Head Coach
Tyrone Young and his staff have obliterated last year's record of new signees, as they will be adding an incredible 65 new football players to the team next year.
"Man what a GREAT DAY TO BE A PANTHER! Our staff has done a phenomenal job with going out and finding culture drivers," said Coach Young. "National Signing Day is one of the best days of the year! If you ask me, it should be a national holiday. I'm extremely proud to have brought in more guys who have high character and will be needle movers in a positive light on campus."
Coach Young's first signing class last year was a record itself, as he set the standard by signing 44 new recruits. Despite the high standards set, Young blew his own record out of the water this year. Among the 65 signees are 10 total transfers, including eight mid-year transfers, and 55 incoming freshman. Young has set a standard for his team to succeed not just on the field, but off it as well. The average incoming GPA for the class is a 3.18, also a new record.
In this class there are nine states represented, including Tennessee (23), Kentucky (19), Alabama (9), Indiana (8), Georgia (5), Ohio (3), Florida (1), Texas (1), and Illinois (1). 11 position groups are represented, with defensive backs being a main focus. Young wanted to emphasize the importance of the trenches with this class, as he brought in 11 defensive lineman and eight offensive lineman.
Coach Young and his staff already showed what a good recruiting class can do, as the Panthers improved their win total from two to four last season. The four wins is the team's most since 2015, and their three conference victories are the most in school history. This included an impressive 13-10 win over Ohio Dominican on Homecoming, Wesleyan's third straight Homecoming victory.
"Signing Day is always a special day," said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Mark Shook. "Football, due ot the countless hours, staff and efforts involved, is even more special as it is the single biggest 'commitment day' for a school of our size each year. Tyrone and his staff have done exactly what he said they would do. He has built a culture of academic and athletic success that students and parents want to be part of in their educational journey. Something special is happening here for us at Kentucky Wesleyan. We are moving forward every day. The best is yet to come."
All 70 transfers and 2024 newcomers have deposited and been accepted into Kentucky Wesleyan College.
The 2024 schedule and related ticket information will be released in the coming weeks.
