DADE CITY, FL - The Kentucky Wesleyan Men's Golf team opened up the back half of their season strong on Monday and Tuesday, tying for 14th in a loaded field at the Saint Leo Invitational. The Panther's team score of 885 (+21) is a 13-shot improvement over last year's 898.
Host Saint Leo won the team championship with an 833 (-31), beating second place Keiser by 15 strokes. Keiser's Isac Wallin took home medalist honors with a 199 (-17).
Leading the way for the Panthers was senior
Tyler Nickol, who scored rounds of 72-77-70 to finish with a 219 (+3), good for a tie for 46th. He was consistent throughout the tournament, as he led the entire 106 person field with 42 pars.
Evan Schumacher was runner up to Nickol, shooting a 223 (+7) thanks to rounds of 71-77-75. He finished in a tie for 70th. Junior
Evan Beery improved by two strokes every round, shooting scores of 78-76-74 to tie for 86th with a 228 (+12).
Getting his first taste of the Florida collegiate golf scene was freshman
Thomas Scott, who tied Beery with a 228 (+12), using rounds of 76-71-81 to get there. After a rough start to the tournament,
Jonah Graham finished strong, clocking rounds of 71 and 74 to help him finish with a 230 (+14).
This Panther squad has continued to improve over the years, as just two years ago the trio of
Tyler Nickol,
Jonah Graham, and
Evan Beery were a part of a squad that shot a 943 in this tournament.
Wesleyan will look to continue their success down south when they travel to Wesley Chapel, Florida, to take part in the Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff on Thursday-Saturday, March 7-9. The Women's Golf Team will open their spring season at that same tournament.
