MURRAY, KY - It was a record setting day for the Claires of Kentucky Wesleyan Track & Field, as both
Rae Sloane and
Claire Lange set school records in their respective events. Sloane grabbed a new school record in the heptathlon, finishing with an even 3200 points, while Lange ran a 1:05.65 to take home the 400m hurdles crown.
Head Coach Sol Stephens said "Claire Sloane enduring a nearly 10-hour event on day one and still improving on multiple times and setting a school record was a great thing for her.
Claire Lange's goal was to just finish standing up in her first 400m hurdles ever, and she did much more than that. I think we found her race.
Karyn Williams didn't jump her personal best today, but a 10.88m is a good start to her outdoor season."
Sloane battled brutal conditions on Friday to set multiple personal bests, including a big PR of 3:03.26 in the 800 and a 16.41 in the 100m hurdles. She also jumped a mark of 4'4" in the high jump, leaped 15'3" in the long jump, thew the javelin a distance of 79'11", threw the shot put a mark of 24'8", and ran a time of 28.84 in the 200m dash.
"I feel like I could have done better, but considering the conditions I have to be happy with what I did," said Sloane. "I feels good to close with a huge PR in the 800 and a new school record in the heptathlon, but there is still more work to do."
Lange, who ran a time of 16.81 in the 100m hurdles earlier in the day, flew around the track in the 400m hurdles. Her time of 1:05.65 not only broke the school record and won her the event, it also ranks her first in the G-MAC and 38th in the country.
"I feel super accomplished in the 400m hurdles, but there is definitely more to be improved there, which makes me excited about the future," said Lange. "I know my training these past few weeks got me where I was. My 100m hurdles needs some work, but with more training I know I'll just continue getting better."
In other events,
Kate Keller and
Abigail Lesniak finished 9th and 10th in the 800m run, with Keller running a 2:28.41 and Lesniak finishing just behind her with a time of 2:28.99. Lesniak also nearly broke the five minute mark in the 1500m, running a time of 5:02.42 to take 15th.
Emery Crume led the 'Thers in the 5000m, taking 13th with a time of 20:06.04, while
Lucy Knutson finished just behind her with a time of 21:13.02, good for 15th.
Coming back into form was
Karyn Williams in the triple jump, as she battled to jump a distance of 35' 8.5", good for third place. Competing in the long jump,
Alexandria Schneider jumped a distance of 14' 4.5", taking 11th in the event. In the discus,
Cambria Vincent threw a mark of 89'9" to take 13th, while
Gabrielle Schultz was just a few feet off her personal best in the hammer throw, launching it 90'8".
Stephens stated "the goal for every meet is to walk in healthy, and leave just as healthy, and for the most part that happened today. We need to continue doing the little things outside of the track to make sure we stay healthy. We have to believe in what we are trying to accomplish day in and day out, things will work out from there."
Wesleyan stays close to home next weekend as they head down to Bowling Green to compete in the Western Kentucky Hilltopper Relays. The meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 31-Apr. 1.
