ST. ALBANS, MO - The Kentucky Wesleyan Men's Golf team improved every round on Monday and Tuesday, and even ended the tournament by shooting the best final round out of all 18 teams. Their rounds of 311-300-294 allowed them to jump from 13th after the opening round to a strong eight place when all was said and done. The Panthers just missed out on breaking 900 by five strokes, shooting a 54-hole score of 905 (+41).
Fellow G-MAC member Tiffin won the event with a team score of 884 (+20). The Dragons' Johan Widal shot a 215 (-1) to garner medalist honors.Â
Leading the charge for the Panthers was junior
Evan Beery. Beery had a whirlwind of a tournament, shooting an 81 in his opening round, then following that up with a 68 (-4) in his second round. He used a third round score of 74 (+2) to finish in a tie for 14th with a 223 (+7). Senior
Tyler Nickol finished just two strokes behind Beery, shooting rounds of 74-77-74 to tie for 29th with a 225 (+9). Much like Beery,
Jonah Graham started out on the wrong side of 80, finishing with an 83 in his opening round. He followed that up with a 77 (+5) in his second round an a third round team low of 70 (-2) in his final round. These three scores put him at a 230 (+14) for the tournament, good for a tie for 39th.Â
Competing as an individual in just his second career tournament,
Thomas Scott shot rounds of 82-77-74 to tie for 45th with a 233 (+17).
Evan Schumacher shot a 235 (+19) and
Ayden Gillilan shot a 236 (+20) to round out the field for the Panthers.Â
As a team, the Panthers improved on their score last year at this tournament by 16 strokes.
Pars were the name of the game for Wesleyan this week, as they tied for second in the tournament with 157 made throughout their three rounds of golf. Leading the par charge was
Jonah Graham, who's 36 pars were the fifth most in the entire tournament. The team was led in birdies by
Evan Beery, who's 12 holes under par were second in the 96 person field.Â
Wesleyan will head back to the St. Louis area next week when they compete in the annual Bearcat Dual Gender, hosted by McKendree University. The tournament will take place on Monday-Tuesday October 16-17, and will be held at Far Oaks Golf Course in Fairview Heights, Illinois.Â
