Panthers 39th at The Midwest Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The largest and toughest event of the Division II wrestling season saw the Kentucky Wesleyan College wrestling team finish 39th on Sunday. The Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis saw over 40 teams participate in the 43rd installment, an event that also featured 75% of the DII wrestling programs in the nation.

Central Oklahoma won the team event with 178.5 points, Pittsburg-Johnstown was second with 95 points. The Panthers struggled through a tough draw in the brackets. Cade Johnson finished the event with a 1-2 record, pinning his opponent Ibraham Tafour of Quincy in his second match of the day. Johnson lost his opening round match at 157-pounds before recording a fall in the first period.

Maxwell Kiel of Belmont Abbey defeated Johnson in the next round of the consolation bracket. Drayden McKerrow lost two hard fought matches at 197-pounds. McKerrow dropped his opening round match 4-0 to Ben Tonnessem from Adams State. Later McKerrow drew All-American Derek Blubaugh of Indianapolis. Blubaugh recorded an easy win over McKerrow earlier this season, this time Blubaugh was pushed to the limit. McKerrow was taken down once and fell 3-0.

The Panthers will enter the Holiday break and return to action on January 8th at the Hawk Classic in Montgomery, Alabama.
