OWENSBORO, Ky. – Kentucky Wesleyan women's soccer (0-4-0, 0-0-0) fought courageously but unfortunately fell to Trevecca Nazarene (2-0-1, 0-0-0) 3-2 at Panther Field on Thursday evening. The Panthers held the lead twice in the match but weren't able to stop the Trojans' offense.
The Panthers struck first in the eighth minute when
Emma Fields found the back of the net off an assist from
Marley Collins. Kentucky Wesleyan continued to pressure the Trojans early, earning five corner kicks and putting several shots on goal, but Trevecca answered in the 17th minute through Elsa Bengtsson to level the match at 1-1.
Kentucky Wesleyan created several more chances before halftime, with Mary Bauchou making saves on shots from
Deca Burr,
Haley Osborne and
Kiera Tynes to keep the match tied heading into the break.
The Panthers regained the lead in the 66th minute when Collins stormed her way through the midfield for a great solo goal to put Kentucky Wesleyan ahead 2-1. The lead lasted less than four minutes, however, as Noelle Garcia scored off an assist from Kayelee Maners in the 70th minute to even the match once again.
Trevecca completed the comeback in the 84th minute when Anny Mitra scored off an assist from Bengtsson to give the Trojans their first lead of the night.
Kentucky Wesleyan continued to search for an equalizer in the final minutes, but Bauchou denied
Haylie Panter in the 87th minute to preserve Trevecca's 3-2 victory.
The Panthers finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots and put nine attempts on goal compared to six for the Trojans. Kentucky Wesleyan also earned eight corner kicks, while Trevecca had three.
Collins led the Panthers with three points on one goal and one assist, while Fields added two points with her first goal of the season. Bauchou finished with six saves for Trevecca, while
Abby Payne and
Caleigh Meeks combined for three saves for Kentucky Wesleyan.
