OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan women's soccer team lost to a tough Findlay team on Saturday at Panthers Field. The Panthers responded to an early Oiler goal to tie the match, but gave up two second half goals, allowing Findlay to get away with a 4-1 decision.
The Panthers played Lake Erie to a scoreless tie on Thursday and had to showcase their stamina with a Saturday afternoon match. The Oilers got the benefit of a good bounce to score the first goal of the game. Their initial shot in the 23
rd minute bounced off
Caleigh Meeks, the rebound landed in front of Raegan Smith who put away the loose ball for the score.
Seconds later,
Henna Gyan lofted a shot from the perimeter of the box over the defense and into the back corner of the net. Gyan's quick decision knotted the match at 1-1. However, Smith scored again in the 36
thminute as the Oilers took a 2-1 lead at the break.
The Panthers continued to get into the Oilers' zone at the start of the second half. In the 63
rd minute the Oilers added an insurance goal and then another off a penalty kick in the 72
nd minute. The Oilers took 29 shots on the day, 16 on target with four goals. Meeks and
Abby Payne combined for five saves on the day.
The Panthers will travel to Crestview Hills, Kentucky on Thursday night to play Thomas More. The match at Republic Bank Field is scheduled for 4PM.
