Panthers Fall 1-0 to West Alabama in Season Opener

LIVINGSTON, AL. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's soccer team lost a 1-0 decision to West Alabama on Friday evening. Wesleyan played a near flawless match, giving-up one score late in the first half.

The Panthers saw action twice this Fall, but it was during the exhibition portion of the schedule. Finding the balance in their style of play this year, Head Coach Ty Stauffer has a better feel for the identity of the Panthers this season.

The match started unassumingly with West Alabama looking for an early goal. The Panthers kept formation and held-off the Tigers. West Alabama took 11 shots in the opening half while the Panthers defense was near perfect. Anchored by their last line of defense, Caleigh Meeks made four saves in the first 45 minutes.

However, in the 41st minute Allie Kimbrell got free and scored the lone goal of the match. Wesleyan nearly found the equalizer in the first minute of the second half, but Yumari Hernandez made a crucial save to preserve a 1-0 advantage. The Panthers continued to press throughout the second half and got one more chance in the final two minutes.

Haylie Panter and Skylar Gray saw their shots go off target in the final two minutes. Brooke Meeks had two shots on the night, both on goal.

The Panthers will travel to Huntsville, Alabama for another match on Sunday. The match against Alabama-Huntsville is scheduled for 12PM.
