CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY. - In a gripping final regular season face-off, the Kentucky Wesleyan men's basketball team triumphed over Thomas More University with a final score of 87-81 on Saturday, at Connor Convocation Center. The Panthers, led by
Quentin Toles' outstanding 26-point performance, showcased their depth versatility throughout the game.
It was another Homecoming for Head Coach
Drew Cooper who spent five years with the Saints, winning 94 games during his tenure. His ability to win at the Connor Center did not deviate from his past success. From the onset, Wesleyan established control, taking an early lead with key plays including
Logan McIntire's layup and Toles' crucial three-pointers.
The team's solid defense catalyzed a scoring run, bolstered by
Terrence Ringo Jr.'s putback dunk helped establish the early lead. The Panthers solidified their lead in the first half as
Alex Gray hit two three-point baskets as well as a two free throws in the final four minutes of the frame to help build a 44-37 halftime lead.
The second period saw a consistent effort from the Panthers as they quickly built a 10-point lead after another Toles three-point jumper. The Panthers enjoyed a steady three possession lead for most of the second half.
Edward Jones Jr. scored six late points including going four of four from the foul line to end the game. In addition to Jones, who helped finalized the victory, the Panthers got bench contributions from
Kaeveon Mitchell who scored eight points in reserve. Despite the late flurry from the Saints, the Panthers finished strong, winning 87-81.
Kennedy Miles and Jones Jr., who contributed significantly across the board. Jones finished with eight points and five assists while Miles finished with nine points. Ringo Jr. was also pivotal with his rebounds and blocks, helping the Panthers' defensive prowess. Ringo pulled-in eight rebounds and made three blocks on the night. Gray finished with 17 points and five rebounds while McIntire added 13 points and six rebounds. Toles made 50% of his shots, including six threes to finished with 26 points.
As the Panthers prepare for their next challenge against Malone University in the first round of the Great Midwest Conference Tournament, they carry forward a record of 22-6 overall and 16-4 in the G-MAC, which finished as the second best record in the league. Findlay defeated Lake Erie in double overtime to claim the Great Midwest regular season title.
The Panthers have beaten the Pioneers twice, both match-ups by two-points. The tone is set as the Panthers head into the upcoming conference tournament on Tuesday at Owensboro Sportcenter. The Panthers are on the bubble of earning an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, ranking ninth this week in the second Midwest Region. The winner on Tuesday will advance into the G-MAC Semi-finals at the highest remaining seed.
