Overlooked Panthers Tie No. 8 Yellow Jackets

OWENSBORO, KY. – In a highly anticipated matchup between two top teams in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference standings, the Kentucky Wesleyan College men's soccer team and Cedarville University played to a 3-3 tie on Thursday afternoon. The Panthers, picked to finish seventh in the league standings, picked-up a point to remain third in the league while nationally eighth-ranked Cedarville holds a slim lead atop the conference.

The results extends the Panthers school record unbeaten streak to 10 matches. The previous mark of seven matches occurred twice in 1981 and1987. The Yellow Jackete (10-0-6, 8-0-4 G-MAC) came into the match having conceded six goals this season and had not given-up a goal since September 27th against Malone, a total of seven straight matches.

BryanThe Panthers scored three on the near invincible Yellow Jackets on penultimate day of October. It was not easy for the Panthers (7-2-7, 7-2-3 G-MAC) as Cedarville scored on a steal and bounding shot across the turf at Steele Stadium in the 15th minute of the match. The lead grew to two goals in the 47th minute on another Yellow Jackets goal.

Momentum quickly swung the way of the Panthers. A minute later, in the 48th minute of the match, Pavel Valchev's corner kick found Hamish Strong who headed-in the first goal over the keeper's outstretched arms. It also marked the first goal scored against Cedarville in over month.

In the 61st minute, the Yellow Jackets got the fortunate bounce as Michael Catanzarite smashed a shot that deflected off of Iver Sjavag, the post, and back to Catanzarite who cleaned up the rebound for another goal.

The match was controlled by the Panthers the final 29 minutes. The two-goal lead did not last long as superb passing down the pitch in the 62nd found Braeden Myers-Curry clearing the last defender and one-on-one with Eben Dewhurst. Myers-Curry allowed the Euan Moss pass to get in front of him and touched a shot under a diving defender, Eddie Merck, and to the right side of the net. Dewhurst was drawn out to his right, but Myer-Curry's shot went left.

The intensity from the Panthers grew as the match went along and in the 74th minute Jersey Lopez got a free kick from the Panthers' sideline and 25-yards away. His pass was perfectly placed to Jhaeem Bryan who headed in the equalizer. In the final 15 minutes the Panthers continued to pressure, but Cedarville continued to pack in defenders and stifle the scoring attempts. Cal Nolan and Lopez each had chances for the game-winner in the final minutes.

In total the Panthers took 13 shots, four on goal. Nolan finished the match with three shots, one on goal, and an assist. Cole Greensheilds, Myers-Curry, and Nicklas Henriksen each notched two shot attempts on the day.

The Panthers will host Ohio Dominican in the final regular season match at Panther Field on Saturday. The program's seniors will be recognized prior to the game. The match is set to begin at 4PM and will be streamed live from Panther Field on FloCollege.
