OWENSBORO, KY. – Great Midwest Athletic Conference action heated-up on a cold Sunday afternoon inside Jones Gymnasium. The Kentucky Wesleyan College wrestling team lost two league matchups to nationally ranked opponents. The Panthers welcomed the No. 13 Lake Erie and No. 16 Ashland to Woodward Health and Recreation Center on Sunday and suffered two defeats.
The opening match of the day saw Ashland takedown Lake Erie 41-3. Then it was the Panthers turn to take-on the Storm. Wesleyan suffered a 43-3 loss.
Gavyn Uribes held a 2-1 lead heading into the third period after a reversal in the second. Uribes held the advantage in riding time and as the clock ticked down, the Panthers' heavyweight collected a take-down to earn a comfortable 6-2 win.
Matthew Velasco suffered a tough 6-4 loss to Anthony Sagaris at 141-pounds as did
Dalen Kimble at 157. Kimble was wrestling up a weight class and lost a 3-2 decision to Austin Fietz. Kimble had momentum in the final period, but could not collect a takedown to put him over the edge. At 184 pounds,
Drayden McKerrow fell 5-2 to Jordan Barnett in another close match-up.
The Panthers lost 55-0 to Ashland to conclude the day. The Eagles flexed against the Panthers, picking up four pins and a technical fall in the match.
Wesleyan will host Thomas More on Saturday as G-MAC competition continues. It will be the Panthers last tune-up before the Great Midwest Championship. Competition is scheduled to start at 2PM.
