MIDLAND, MI. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's soccer team opened Great Midwest action with a clean sheet against Northwood on Thursday afternoon. Wesleyan leaves Michigan with a 1-0 victory thanks to
Jacob Boling and
Calum Newson teaming-up on the game-winner.
The Panthers (3-1, 1-0 GMAC) dominated the first 30 minutes of play, out working the Timberwolves (0-3-1, 0-1-0 GMAC) down the field. Unfortunately, the Panthers could not land any of their seven shots in the opening period. The Timberwolves pulled even with seven shots of their own in the opening half, mostly coming in the final 15 minutes.
Soufian Khaloufi was tested three times in the first half and made three saves to preserve a 0-0 tie at the break. Like the first half, the second half started with the Panthers being more aggressive getting two shots in the first three minutes.
Braden Meyers-Curry saw his shot sail right in the 46
th minute, while
Callum Nolan's shot was saved in the 48
th minute.
Khaloufi saved shots in the 51
st and 54
th minute to prevent the Timberwolves from taking control. A minute later, Nolan looked to score the match's first goal, but it was blocked by the Northwood defense.
The Timberwolves made a flurry of substitutions at the 70
th minutes and the Panthers took advantage. Before the changes could settle in the Panthers played quick down the field when
Jacob Boling found
Calum Newson off a throw-in. Newson off one touch fired a shot into the left-center of the Timberwolves' net.
Northwood had one chance to tie the match in the 75
th minute, but Khalooufi made the save. The Panthers maintained control throughout the final 15 minutes of the match. Newson finished the match with four shots, two on goal, and one goal. Nolan produced five shots, two on goal. Khaloufi made six saves.
The Panthers will travel to Findlay, Ohio on Saturday to take on the Oilers. The match is scheduled to start at 12PM CT.
