INDIANAPOLIS, IN. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College wrestling team had three placers at the NCAA Super Regionals on Saturday. The Panthers finished 10
th on the day while the University of Central Oklahoma took the team title.
Both
Kelton Farmer and
Gabe Adams finished fifth at their respective weight classes, each had chances to advance to Nationals late in the day. Adams won his first match at 141-pounds by major decision. Then in the quarterfinals defeated Kody Ketchum 11-6. After a tough 4-1 loss in the semifinals, Adams had a 4-1 lead and an advantage in riding time in the consolation semifinals but Quincy's Sabian Russell made a late comeback to escape with a 5-4 decision.
Farmer's day at heavyweight started with a 7-1 win over Jay Thompson from Indianapolis. Farmer fell in the quarterfinals, but made a march back into contention with back-to-back pins in the consolation rounds. Kayden Garrett was pinned by Farmer in the third period and Thomas Massengale from Drury in the first period. Farmer lost a 11-3 decision in the consolation semi-finals but got a rematch with Central Oklahoma's Trent Strong in the fifth-place match. Strong pinned Farmer in the quarterfinals, but this time Farmer won a 5-2 decision.
Matthew Velasco also placed for the Panthers as he finished sixth in his first Regional appearance. Velasco lost his quarterfinal match, but after a bye was in the consolation third round, he pinned Perry Lake of Quincy at the end of the first period. James Anderson of Central Missouri defeated Velasco in the consolation semifinals.
The Panthers tallied 32.5 points, 1.5 points behind Newman who placed ninth. The Panthers program continued to make incremental progress. Last season the Wesleyan had two places at Regionals, Adams and
Cade Johnson and scored 19.5 points as a team.
