OWENSBORO, KY - It was a tale of two games on Sunday, as the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers fought hard and nearly took down the G-MAC leading Ohio Dominican Panthers in game one, falling 3-2. Game two didn't go Wesleyan's way, as ODU used a big eight-run third inning to take the game by a score of 14-2.
Ohio Dominican improves to 31-16 (18-2 G-MAC), while Wesleyan drops to 9-40 (0-20 G-MAC).
Game One
80% of the scoring in game one was done in the first inning, as Ohio Dominican opened up the game with two runs in the top of the first. Wesleyan answered back, as
Megan Matheis and
Kennedy Matheis each tallied an RBI in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at two. The pitching duel began from there, as both pitchers didn't allow an earned run for the final six innings of the game.
ODU took advantage of an error in the top of the fifth to score what would be the game's winning run. Wesleyan had their chances, but they left eight runners stranded in the game, leading to their defeat.
Shelbi Patterson went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the game, while
Megan Matheis went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Allie Dunn (6-21) pitched a complete game and allowed just two earned runs in the contest.
Game Two
Down 4-0 after two innings,
Kennedy Matheis attempted to mount a comeback, notching both an RBI and a run scored in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to just 4-2. The bats went cold for the Panthers from there, and ODU poured in 10 runs over the next two innings to pull away.
Kennedy Matheis went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored in the game.
Sydney Saalwaechter (0-2) took the loss for Wesleyan.
Wesleyan will close their season out this weekend when they travel to Ursuline and Lake Erie for a pair of doubleheaders. Their contest at Ursuline will take place on Friday, April 28th at 12 p.m. CT.
