SMYRNA, TN - The bats were on fire in Smyrna on Friday night, as the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers and Davenport Panthers combined to score 23 runs on 22 hits. Unfortunately for the Panthers from Kentucky, Davenport used a run in the bottom of the sixth to win the game by a 12-11 score.
Davenport is now 1-0 on their young season, while Wesleyan falls to 2-4.
When KWC scores, they score in bunches. After a scoreless first inning by both teams, Wesleyan scored five runs in the second on five hits.
Kennedy Matheis opened the inning with a walk, and immediately stole second to put herself in scoring position. An
Allie Dunn single put her on third, and she scored Wesleyan's first run on the next play thanks to a single from
Grace Colvin. Dunn scored a few plays later on a
Sarah Linville single. Colvin scored on an RBI from
Shelbi Patterson, Linville scored on a
Guinny Garr single, and
Augusta Garr rounded out the inning with a run on a
Megan Matheis RBI single.
Davenport scored four runs in the bottom of the second and three more in the third to take a 7-5 lead. It didn't take long for Wesleyan to regain the lead, however, as the Panthers used Davenport pitching struggles to score five runs in the inning. Thanks to multiple walks and a hit-by-pitch, KWC left the top of the fourth inning leading 10-7.
Davenport took an 11-10 lead in the bottom of the fifth, but Wesleyan quickly tied it up thanks to a Colvin RBI to score Dunn in the top of the sixth. DU scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth to secure the one-run win.
Augusta Garr went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored, while
Grace Colvin went 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI's.
Allie Dunn (2-2) pitched all six innings and struck out two in the loss.
The Panthers will be back in action in Smyrna tomorrow when they take on Maryville and Ferris State. First pitches are scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m. CT.
