Young Panthers Compete with the Best of the Best

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The 44th installment of the Midwest Classic was one of the largest in its history. A total of 51 of 67 NCAA Division II teams traveled to Indianapolis for the annual two-day event. The Kentucky Wesleyan College wrestling team finished their matches on Saturday evening.
 
In what is known as the biggest and toughest tournament in the nation, the Midwest Classic features a deeper field that the national tournament. 21 of the top 27 teams in the nation were in attendance this week as well as seven of the top-10 programs. The third ranked and host Indianapolis Greyhounds continued as host of the Midwest Classic. The field also consisted of the top ranked Lander as well as the defending National Champions Central Oklahoma. 
 
The Panthers' Tournament was highlighted by Gabe Adams and Cade Johnson, both who won matches at their respective weight classes. Adams lost his opening round match, but bounced back in the next round with a sudden victory at 141-pounds. Tied at 4-4 at the end of regulation, Adams ended the bout with a takedown early in the extra period to defeat Hunter Pfantz from Southwest Minnesota State. 
 
Johnson received a bye to open the event and lost his opening match at 157- pounds. In the consolation bracket, Johnson earned a 12-1 major decision over Lincoln Memorial's Logan Simpson before falling in the next round. 
 
The Panthers will travel to Montgomery Alabama on Sunday January 7th for the Huntingdon Open. Wesleyan is the defending champions of the annual event.
