OWENSBORO, KY - Big plays were the name of the game on Saturday, as both teams had multiple plays that could defined as "game changing." Unfortunately for the Panthers, Northwood made just a few more plays, leading them to a 28-13 win.
Northwood improves to 3-6 (3-4 G-MAC), while Wesleyan falls to 3-6 (2-5 G-MAC).
Not much went right for either team in the opening quarter, as both the Panthers and Timberwolves had multiple drives stall out. Despite this, Northwood did manage to score a touchdown five minutes into the quarter, the only score of the frame.
Northwood pulled some trickery on their first dive of the second quarter, faking a punt at the Wesleyan 47 and handing the ball to Jack Kalakay, who rushed it in for the touchdown, doubling the visitor's lead. The Panthers answered right back, as a
Khia Sherrard 40 yard reception and a
Deonco Wilkerson 24 yard catch set quarterback
Christian Arrambide up perfectly for a two yard touchdown run, pulling Wesleyan within a score. Each team had three drives fall short after that score and Northwood led by at touchdown at the half.
The Timberwolves came out of the locker room on a mission, and put together an 11-play, 50-yard scoring drive to open up the quarter. Midway through the frame, the Panthers looked to have another drive stopped, this time after a holding penalty put them back at their own 10. That's when
Kam Sherrard took the handoff from Arrambide and took off 90 yards down the field for one of the longest touchdowns in Wesleyan history. On the kickoff after the touchdown, Northwood's Brandon Martin broke multiple tackles en-route to a 90 yard touchdown return, quickly making it a two score game again.
As the rain started to pour down, the tougher it was to move the ball up the field. The scoreline showed, as neither team was able to score in the fourth quarter, giving Northwood the 28-13 victory.
Christian Arrambide went 10-for-29 for 127 yards and a rushing touchdown.
Kam Sherrard led with 117 rushing yards, while
Deonco Wilkerson tallied 62 receiving yards to lead the team.
Bryce Yeast's 10 tackles led the team, whlie
Zereoue Johnson and
Kajuan Hardesty were close behind with eight each.
Wesleyan will play in their final road game of the season next week when they travel to Painesville, Ohio, to take on the Lake Erie Storm. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
