Late game heroics lead Panthers to comeback victory

PAINESVILLE, OH - The hometown kid came through when it mattered most. After a late game scuffle saw starting quarterback Christian Arrambide get dismissed from the game, backup quarterback Joey Cambron (Daviess County HS) put together a 7-play, 88-yard drive that ended with an 12-yard touchdown pass to Deonco Wilkerson, sending the game to overtime. This came after the Panthers saw themselves down 17 with just under six minutes remaining. In extra time, the Panther defense forced a missed field goal from Lake Erie on their first and only possession. The Wesleyan offense took advantage, and Wilkerson took a handoff from Cambron and rushed in the endzone to score the final points of the game, giving Wesleyan the 43-37 overtime victory.

This was Wesleyan's first overtime victory since a 31-30 win over Central State back in 2009.

Kentucky Wesleyan now sits at 4-6 (3-5 G-MAC), while Lake Erie falls to 1-9 (0-8 G-MAC).

Things couldn't have started much better for the Panthers, as Christian Arrambide ran for a four yard touchdown on their first drive of the game. On the Storm's first play after the touchdown, Gerald Palmer recovered a fumble, and the Wesleyan offense capitalized. Arrambide hit tight end Preston Self for a nine-yard touchdown, Self's first touchdown of the season. This put Wesleyan up 14-0 just six minutes in. Lake Erie managed to get a touchdown late, and the Panthers led 14-0 after one.

The Storm scored a touchdown on their first possession of the second quarter, but Mason Keel blocked the extra point, keeping it a two point Panther lead. On the Panther's final drive of the half, Arrambide hit Self in the endzone for the second time, making it 20-12 to the good guys. Lake Erie grabbed a late field goal and Wesleyan went into the break up by five.

The second half started out ugly for the visitors, as Lake Erie took it to to the Panthers. The Storm went on a 22-0 run, taking a late 37-20 lead. All Wesleyan needed was a spark, and a safety with 6:47 remaining in the game was just what the doctor ordered. Wesleyan then took advantage of a short field, and Arrambide opened up the drive with a 37-yard completion to Khia Sherrard, and finished it with a three yard touchdown run. All this led to the late game heroics of Owensboro's own Joey Cambron

Christian Arrambide went 18-for-30 with two passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns, and three interceptions. In his one drive, Joey Cambron went 3-for-5 for 70 yards and a touchdown. Playing in his first game back from injury, Ayden Houston led the Panthers with 44 yards on the ground. Khia Sherrard caught six balls for 135 yards, his second game over 100 yards this season. Deonco Wilkerson both caught and rushed for a score in the contest.

On the defensive end, Najai Watson led with 10 tackles, incuding one sack for a loss of 18 yards. Josh Williams notched nine tackles and 0.5 TFL, while Kajuan Hardesty had seven tackles, 2.5 TFL, and one sack.

The Panthers will close out their season next week when they host the Ashland Eagles for senior day. The senior day ceremony will take place at Steele Stadium prior to the 4 p.m. CT kickoff.
