Nationally ranked Tiffin pulls away from Panthers late

TIFFIN, OH - Taking on undefeated and No. 23 ranked Tiffin, the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers kept it close, having a chance to come within one score midway through the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, Wesleyan failed to capitalize, and Tiffin scored two late touchdowns to pull away and win 37-12.

Tiffin improves to 8-0 (6-0 G-MAC) while Wesleyan falls to 3-5 (2-4 G-MAC).

The Dragons used a big 17-point first quarter to make a statement early. After scoring on their opening drive, the Dragons forced a Wesleyan fumble and recovered it for a touchdown, going up 14-0 after just three minutes of play. A field goal at the 5:55 mark would put Tiffin up 17-0. After they got their mojo back, Christian Ararmbide found Camden Williams for a 15-yard touchdown. William's score was his eighth on the season, the most since David Florence recorded that same number in 2021. At the end of one, Tiffin led 17-6.

The second quarter was fairly uneventful, as both teams seemed to settle down. An early field goal from the Dragons was the only score of the quarter. Wesleyan's big play came from their defense, as Bishop Byrd forced a fumble that was recovered by Gerald Palmer to half what what was looking like a strong drive for the home side. Tiffin went into the break up 20-6 on the visiting Panthers.

Just like the second quarter, an early field goal from the Dragons helped extend their lead. Wesleyan then went on an 11-play, 59-yard drive that not only took up most of the quarter, but also ended in a 14-yard touchdown reception from Kam Sherrard. Wesleyan forced a turnover on downs on Tiffin's next drive, and went into the fourth quarter down 11 and with momentum.

Kentucky Wesleyan managed to get all the way down to the Tiffin three yard line, taking advantage of a pass interference penalty that gave Wesleyan a big first and goal. Despite four attempts, the Tiffin defense held strong, as the Panthers only gained one yard on four plays, turning the ball over on downs. Following this failure to score, Wesleyan seemed to be all out of gas, as Tiffin scored twice more to close the game, winning 37-12.

Christian Arrambide went 15-for-35 with 116 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Landon Newman led the team on the ground with a monster 150 yards, thanks in part to a big 56 yard rush in the second quarter. Camden Williams led Wesleyan with five receptions for 39 yards and touchdown. Defensively, Jahiem Williams stepped up and showed out, finishing the game with a career high 12 tackles. John Purdy was right behind him with 10 tackles, including one TFL. Najai Watson recorded his team leading fourth interception of the season in the game.

After two weeks on the road, Wesleyan will be back at home this weekend when they host the Northwood Timberwolves. Kickoff will be at 6 p.m. CT at Steele Stadium on Saturday, October 28th.
