COLUMBUS, OH - Up 2-0 at the half, the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers nearly gave the game away to Ohio Dominican on Thursday. But a late
Max Wawrin goal helped Wesleyan get out of Columbus with a 3-3 tie. Wesleyan now has six ties on the year, a double the most ties they've ever had in a season and the most in the G-MAC by two games.
Wesleyan moves to 6-3-6 (3-3-5 G-MAC) while ODU sits at 2-7-4 (2-5-4 G-MAC).
Things were looking good early for the visitors, as
Calum Newson scored in his third consecutive game, putting Wesleyan up 1-0 in the 18th minute of play. Just a few minutes later,
Matteo Napoletano picked off a pass at the top of the 18 and put a shot in the lower left corner of the goal to give Wesleyan a 2-0 advantage. KWC's defense would hold the rest of the half and the visitors went into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.
Ohio Dominican, playing on their senior day, didn't want to go down without a fight. They scored three unanswered goals to go up 3-2 late. Staring at a dangerous one-goal deficit in the midst of a tight playoff race, a
Haakon Torvbraaten pass found the foot of
Max Wawrin after a set piece, and the senior put it in to tie the game up a 3-3 late. Niether team mustered up much offense over the final few minutes and the game ended in a draw.
ODU led 15-10 on shots, while the teams were tied at 6-6 on shots-on-goal.
Calum Newson led with three shots, with two of them being on frame.
Arthur Hill made three saves in the game.
The Panthers, who now sit in sixth in the G-MAC with just three games to play, will have a big battle with in-state rival Thomas More on Saturday. Earlier this year the teams tied at 3-3 at Panther Field in Owensboro. Kickoff for this weekend's endeaver is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
