OWENSBORO, KY - It was a grand opening for the Kentucky Wesleyan Men's Soccer Team on Friday night, as they took down the visiting Midway Eagles by a score of 7-1. This is the Panther's largest victory since a 9-1 win over Ohio Valley on Oct. 12, 2013, and is their largest season opening win since a 9-3 triumph over Cumberland (Tenn.) on Sept. 11, 1988.
Newcomer
Theo White immediately got things going in the first half, scoring the first goal of his young career just seven minutes into the contest. The Panthers went up 2-0 just a few minutes later when a bouncing ball in the box found it's way to
Declan Sandifer, who calmly knocked it in.
Santiago Henrich then took advantage of perfect pass from
Jake Peveler to make it a 3-0 game at the half.
After Midway got a goal back in the 64th minute, the Panthers kept coming, with
Calum Newson,
Jake Peveler,
Max Wawrin, and
Jacob Boling each scoring in the next 15 minutes to give the Panthers a resounding 7-1 victory.
The Panthers outshot the Eagles 35-8 in the contest, and held a 14-5 advantage on shots-on-goal. After being one of the top assist men in the G-MAC last season,
Jake Peveler picked up right where he left off, notching two assists on the day.
Arthur Hill and
Hannes Nilsson split the game in goal, with each making two saves in their respective halves.
Wesleyan will have a tought test on Wednesday when they head to Harrogate, TN to take on Lincoln Memorial (0-1), who lost 1-0 to #2 Charleston tonight. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM CT.
