A Full Hearted Victory

OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team cracked the code against Tiffin University on Monday night. The Panthers picked-up a 71-61 victory over the Dragons in a make-up contest originally scheduled for January 6th at Tiffin.

Less than four days ago the Panthers (15-9, 12-6 GMAC) suffered a loss to the Dragons (11-12, 8-9 GMAC) at the historic Owensboro Sportscenter. The Panthers broke Tiffin's hearts on Monday, coming right out of the gate firing on all cylinders. Wesleyan scored the first seven points of the game and finished the first quarter with a 26-17 lead.

The Panthers continued their hot shooting in the second period and started the frame on a 14-0 run. Shiya Hoosier scored the first bucket of the period while Tahlia Walton ended the run with a lay-up. The lead grew to 24 points after Shaylee McDonald's three-point play moments later. Wesleyan shot 65% from the field in the half and connected on seven of 11 three-point baskets. Emma Johnson helped spark the offense with 11 points off the bench while the Panthers went into the locker-room with a 50-27 lead.

The Dragons battled back in the third period, shooting nearly 60% from the floor and trimming the deficit to 11 points, 59-48. Second half turnovers allowed the Dragons to get more opportunities to hang around and with four minutes left they had cut the Panthers margin to four-points, 61-57.

The Panthers forced back-to-back turnovers, the second being a steal from Cali Nolot who found Walton on the breakaway for an easy two points. Down the stretch the Panthers hit six consecutive free throws to hold off the threat.

Johnson finished with 13 points on four of four shooting. Walton added 12 points and three rebounds whiles Hoosier ended the game with 10 points and three assists.

Wesleyan will travel to Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday to play Trevecca Nazarene. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 PM.
