ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College wrestling team started its season on Saturday at the Maryville Open. Head Coach
Brandon Crawford as well as a host of other wrestlers made their debuts for the Panthers with
Drayden McKerrow putting together an impressive showing with a sixth-place finish at 197 pounds.
McKerrow lost his opening round match 12-4, but after receiving a bye in the consolation round, he was matched-up with teammate
Cameron Baker in the second round. McKerrow won 6-4 and advanced a round further with a tie-breaker win over McKendree's Alex Drmac.
Anthonie Banuelos from Missouri Valley defeated McKerrow in the opening round and circled back around for a rematch in the consolation bracket. This time Banuelos picked-up a 4-1 victory, sending McKerrow into the fifth-place match. Griffin Stine from Indianapolis edged past McKerrow 2-1.
Kam'Ron Shannon-Likely wrestling unattached placed fifth at 197 points in the amateur division. Shannon-Likely won a 9-1 major decision in the quarterfinals, but after two losses ended-up in the fifth-place match. Kayden Garrett of Quincy was pinned by Shannon-Likely in the second period.
At 165 pounds
Cade Johnson finished the day 1-2 record, including a pin in the consolation rounds.
The Panthers will travel to Lebanon, Illinois on Wednesday for a dual with McKendree University. The match is scheduled to start at 7 PM.
