CEDARVILLE, OH - The Kentucky Wesleyan men's soccer team dropped a tight G-MAC contest 2-1 to Cedarville on Thursday night.
Cedarville now moves to 8-5-1 (6-4 G-MAC) while Wesleyan falls to 7-4-3 (4-3-3 G-MAC).
The race for the conference tournament is tighter than ever, with nine teams separated by just 10 points. Wesleyan currently sits in seventh place, one point behind Northwood and Findlay. The top six qualify for the conference tournament.
Playing in windy and wet conditions, the game got off to a quick start, with Cedarville's Andy Volk scoring in the seventh minute of the game. Wesleyan quickly answered back, with the G-MAC's top goalscorer
Calum Newson heading one home two minutes later to even things up at one. Volk then scored his second goal of the game in the 20th minute and Cedarville went up 2-1. Despite multiple chances, Cedarville held the one goal lead into the break.
Both teams went back-and-forth in the second half, with Wesleyan's
Theo White and
Aaron Wayne each putting shots just off the mark in the final 15 minutes. Despite Wesleyan's possession in the final 10 minutes, the Yellow Jackets held on for the one goal victory.
Calum Newson's goal was his 12th of the season.
Zach Moore was credited with the assist, his third of the year.
Hannes Nilsson made seven saves in the loss.
Wesleyan travels to Findlay on Saturday to play in a game with major conference tournament implications. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. CT.
