PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College wrestling team returned to the mat on Friday night at the Great Midwest Championship Duals. The Panthers suffered two losses on the day to No. 22 Lake Erie and No. 8 Ashland.
Kairus Washington highlighted Wesleyan's day by going 2-0 on day one.
The Panthers opened the duals against the No. 22 Storm. Lake Erie picked-up a quick 53-3 victory. Washington earned the lone team points at heavyweight. Washington shut-out Lake Erie's Paul Scaramuzzino 7-0. After a scoreless first period Washington recorded an escape and take down in the second period. He added to the lead with a take down in the final period.
The Eagles, ranked eighth in the nation, topped the Panthers 44-6. Washington won a thrilling 4-2 match to conclude day one. Trailing 2-1 and down in riding time heading into the final period Washington was awarded a penalty point early, but still had to overcome riding time. With a takedown in the final minute Washington earned a 4-2 victory.
Andrew Parker also recorded a suspenseful decision in the 133 pound bout. Parker trailed 8-1 early in the second period. After Ashland's Nathan Godsey nearly recorded a pin, Parker reversed Godsey and recorded near-fall points to head into the final period trailing 8-7. Parker's stamina proved to be the deciding factor in the final two minutes as Godsey got into trouble with a stalling call while allowing an escape. Parker quickly recorded another takedown and rode Godsey to the finish for a 12-8 win.
The Panthers will have two more matches on Saturday as the Great Midwest Championship Duals continue. Wesleyan will take on Findlay and Tiffin with the first dual scheduled to start at 9 AM CT.
