OWENSBORO, KY - The Kentucky Wesleyan Football Team went into Saturday's game against William Jewell with a chance to move to .500 on the year through their first four games for the first time since 2018, and they did not disappoint. KWC led wire-to-wire to nab a big 41-21 victory, the largest in Head Coach
Craig Yeast's career at Wesleyan.
With the win the Panthers move to 2-2 on the season while the Cardinals drop to 0-4.Â
Wesleyan made a statement early on, forcing a punt by WJC on their opening drive. After moving the ball up the field via throws to
David Florence and
Peyton Peters, quarterback
Christian Arrambide used his legs to score the first touchdown of the game. After a missed field goal by the Cardinals, KWC got the ball back and knew what to do with it. The Panthers marched it up the field and cumulated the drive with a
David Florence 12 yard touchdown reception from Arrambide. The KWC defense was swarming, and it showed on the WJC's last drive of the first quarter. Raymond Jackson read Cardinal quarterback Bart Harris' pass perfectly to nap his first interception of the season.Â
Neither team was able to get much going in the second quarter as defense was the name of the game in the frame. Just when it looked like the Cardinals were going to break through and kick a field goal to close the half,
Dalan Cofer soared in to block the field goal and Wesleyan went into halftime up 14-0.Â
Wesleyan started the second half off with a bang. On just the second play of the drive, senior Kishawn Walker intercepted a pass and took it 10 yards to the house for the pick six. A
Chris Mangold extra point put the Panthers up 21-0. Following a 3-and-out by the Cardinals, the Panthers scored again. Arrambide hit
Chauncey Greer for a 38 yard touchdown reception to put KWC up 28-0 midway through the third quarter. The Cardinals got back in the game with two quick scores to make it 28-14. Brennan McGuire silenced the William Jewell fans on the next drive, catching a 19 yard Arrambide pass for a touchdown to put the Panthers up by three scores.Â
On 3rd and 9 at the KWC 14, the Cardinals were in prime position to get back in the game.
Shedrick Kirk wasn't about to let that happen as he intercepted a pass near the goal line and returned it 33 yards to turn the tide in favor of the home team. Wesleyan took advantage, as just a few plays later Arrambide and Greer connected for the duo's second touchdown of the day.
Tyreik Norwood and
Nicholas Haddock had a big sack to slow down the Cardinal's final drive, and the Panthers would kneel down at the end of the game for the win.
Christian Arrambide had a great game, going 25-for-33 for 362 yards and four touchdowns, as well as one on the ground.
Chauncey Greer led the team in receiving yards (106) followed by
David Florence (92) and
Gavin George (63)
Jatorian Dillard led the Panthers with 27 yards on the ground.
Jalen Humphrey led the defense with seven tackles, while
Shedrick Kirk, Raymond Jackson and Kishawn Walker each had an interception.
The Panthers led the Cardinals in nearly every major category, such as passing (362-300), rushing (60-1), total offense (422-301), and first downs (21-15).Â
Kentucky Wesleyan will look to ride this momentum into conference play next week as they take on Ohio Dominican, who just upset #19 UIndy in a double-overtime thriller. The game will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 12 p.m. at Steele Stadium.
