Football takes ODU to the wire in conference opener

OWENSBORO, KY - On Saturday afternoon the Kentucky Wesleyan football team played in what was no doubt one of the most exciting games in KWC football history. Unfortunately for the Panthers, they ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. Ohio Dominican won the thrilling back and forth game by a final score of 32-30.

With the win Ohio Dominican moves to 4-1 (1-0 G-MAC) while Kentucky Wesleyan falls to 2-3 (0-1 G-MAC).

The first quarter was a defensive quarter all the way. Both teams were forced to punt on their opening drives and on ODU's second drive of the game senior Shedrick Kirk intercepted a pass at the Wesleyan 23 to halt what looked to be a scoring drive for ODU. Ohio Dominican then came right back and intercepted a pass by Christian Arrambide to set up their first scoring drive of the game. The opening quarter ended with Ohio Dominican leading 7-0.

Wesleyan started the second quarter with a long drive that ended in a Chris Mangold 25 yard field goal to cut the game to 7-3 in favor of Ohio Dominican. ODU followed KWC's scoring drive with one of their own, scoring a touchdown with three minutes left in the game to put them up 13-3. Jalen Wilson came up big on the extra point, both blocking and recovering the kick to keep Ohio Dominican at bay. The game looked to be slipping away from Wesleyan when ODU quarterback Evan Ernst hit David Turner for a 50 yard touchdown pass to put them up 20-3. Wesleyan then drove down the field in just 32 seconds to score a touchdown of their own to close the half. Arrambide hit Chauncey Greer with a 23 yard strike to cut it to a 20-10 game at the break.

KWC opened the second half with a drive that ended in a Deonco Wilkerson 1 yard touchdown run. The momentum kept shifting Wesleyan's way on ODU's next drive, as Kirk intercepted his second pass of the game to put the ball back in the Panther's hands.

The fourth quarter started with a huge 4th down stop by the Kentucky Wesleyan defense. On the very next Ohio Dominican drive, KiShawn walker read the quarterback perfectly and intercepted his third pass of the season. HIs 36 yard return put Wesleyan in prime position to take the lead. Christian Arrambide made good use of the great field position and would score a few plays later on a six yard TD run to put the Panthers up 24-20. Ohio Dominican countered with a touchdown of their own on the next drive to put them up 27-24. Following a fumble by KWC at their own 35, the Wesleyan defense held strong and forced Ohio Dominican to make a 40 yard field goal. Down 30-24 with two and a half minutes left, Wesleyan kept fighting. On a 3rd and 8, Arrambide hit Brennan McGuire for a 36 yard pass that put them in incredible field position. Jatorian Dillard powered his way in for a 6 yard touchdown to tie the game at 30. Going for the win, Mangold's extra point was blocked and returned for a two-point conversion. Following an onside kick recovery by Jalen Wilson, the Panthers had their second kick blocked in as many tries and ODU took the game 32-30.

Arrambide was 19-for-34 with 187 passing yards, two total touchdowns and an interception. Jatorian Dillard continued his strong season with 66 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Brennan McGuire led the receivers with 71 receiving yards.

Jalen Humphrey was a man amongst boys on the defensive end, totaling 14 tackles, including one TFL. Ramond Jackson and Armand Childs each had seven tackles to their name.

The Panthers will be back in action next week Saturday as they head to the University of Findlay to take on the Oilers. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. CT.
