NORTH CANTON, OH - Senior
Preston Wright's heroics weren't enough on Saturday night as the Panthers dropped their second game of the season to Walsh 2-1 in overtime.
With the win Walsh moves to 9-2-3 (6-2-2 G-MAC) while the Panthers fall to 1-9 (1-8 G-MAC).
It was a very defensive minded first half, with just six total shot attempts between both teams. Walsh broke through the Panther defense in the 23rd minute to score a goal and give them a 1-0 lead, which would be their advantage at the break.
KWC put the pressure on in the second half, outshooting the Cavaliers 7-3 in the frame. That pressure eventually lead to the Wesleyan breakthrough as
Max Wawrin blew by his defender and crossed the ball in to a waiting
Preston Wright. Wright headed the ball into the back of the net to give him his first career goal and send the game into overtime tied at 1.
Wawrin managed to get off the first shot of the overtime period and force a save by the Walsh goalkeeper, but Walsh put in a shot in from 18 yards out just a few minutes later to give them the win.
Jake Peveler led the Panthers with four shots, followed closely behind by
Zach Moore with two. Goalie
Matthew Meyer made three saves in the match.
KWC led the way in both shots (10-8) and shots on goal (7-6). Walsh managed to get nine corner kicks in the match, compared to just one for Wesleyan. KWC committed 20 fouls to Walsh's 17.
The Panthers will hit the road for their next contest as they take on Ohio Dominican in Columbus on Thursday. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. CT.
