MEMPHIS, TENN. - The Kentucky Wesleyan College wrestling team continued its season on Wednesday against Ouachita Baptist. The Panthers competing for the fourth time in eight days suffered a 39-9 loss to the Tigers.
The Panthers (1-3) have gotten off to solid starts in each match this season. In a thrilling opening 125-pound match, Adam Bender got an early takedown and earned a bonus point in riding time to earn a 3-2 decision.
In the 133-pound match Andrew Parker fell behind early, but got stronger in the third period. With a couple of take downs in the final period Parker cut into Evan Kennedy's lead. However, the flurry ended with Kennedy escaping with a takedown in the final seconds.
Caleb Craig jumped out to an early start as well, recording a take down and near fall points. Shortly thereafter Craig ended the 141 match with a pin 61 seconds into the match. The victory gave the Panthers a 9-3 lead.
The Tigers (1-4) benefited from three forfeited matches, a major decision, technical fall, and pin the rest of the way. Ethan Rogers battled at 197-pounds but suffered a 3-1 decision. However in the additional matches outside of the dual, Rogers recorded a pin in 38 seconds.
The Panthers are serving as host for the Great Midwest Championship on Saturday, Jan. 23, in Jones Gymnasium, a format which includes individualized brackets for each weight class. Six schools are scheduled to be in attendance, including new associate member Ashland.
