OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's golf team improved by 15 shots in the final round of the Panther Invitational and finished fifth place. The Panthers carded a final round 297 to jump two spots on the leaderboard while
Carter Dodson notched an 11
th place finish.
An afternoon thunderstorm on Sunday shortened the event to 36 holes. The Panthers opened play with a round of 312 to sit in seventh place. As the wind picked-up in the afternoon Wesleyan struggled down the stretch.
Carter Dodson led the team with a round of five over par 77.
Both
Alex Phillips and
Christian Tooley fired identical rounds of 78 in the opening round at the Pearl Club. The Panthers got off to a hot start in the second round and battled down the stretch to improve by 15 shots. Dodson made two birdies and two bogeys in the final round to shoot even par 72 on the 6,812-yard course. He finished 11
th overall in a field of 58 competitors.
Collins Dodson and Phillips each posted final rounds of two over par 74. Phillips carded a two-day total of 152 to finish 13
th while Collins was one shot behind to place 15
th. Tooley showed a one-shot improvement on day two, shooting 77.
Rounding out the top five for the Panthers was
Samuel Bland who shot back-to-back rounds of 81.
Jackson Caudill recorded rounds of 85 and 81 to place 43
rd.
Lance Lewis posted a 36-hole total 168 after a final round of 83.
Max Dubree showed the most improvement on day two as he bested his day one total by 15 shots, closing with a 79.
Ryan Hodges finished with a 242.
The University of Southern Indiana and Missouri Science and Technology were tied after the opening round, but the Miners took the team title after a final round of two over par 290. The Screaming Eagles finished in a tie for second with Brescia University at 596.
Steven Zehr from Brescia took medalist honors with two rounds under par. His five under par total of a 139 produced a two-shot victory over Colin Stolze from Missouri S&T.
The Panthers will travel to Springfield, Illinois on Saturday to compete in the Illinois Springfield Spring Invitational. The 36-hole event will be contested at Piper Glenn Golf Course.
