Two Rosy Victories

CLERMONT, FL. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team picked-up two wins on Thursday at the National Training Center. The Panthers defeated the College of Saint Rose. 7-3 before winning a thrilling 3-0 contest against Missouri-St. Louis, marking the first match-up between the two schools since the 2017 NCAA Regional, a 11-1 UMSL victory. The win also marks the first victory over the Tritons since the 2008 season.
 
Game 1: Saint Rose 3, Kentucky Wesleyan 7
Lexie Mullen drove-in a run in a three-run first inning for the Panthers (6-5). The Golden Knights (0-1) scratched a run across in the top of the third, but Wesleyan answered with four more in the bottom half. Caitlyn Lawson started the rally with an RBI single while Meredith Daunhauer ended it with a RBI triple.
 
Bailey Woodall took care of the rest, pitching six innings, allowing three runs, one earned on seven hits with two strikeouts. Autumn Grady pitched a scoreless seventh to preserve the 7-3 victory.

Maci Brown pitched a complete game shutout in the finale. The game went six scoreless innings with the help from the Panthers defense.  The Tritons (4-10) continually got runners in scoring position. After a lead-off triple in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tritons were unable to push a run across. Jaclyn Parker charged-in a on fly ball making the catch and firing a strike into home before the go-ahead run could cross.
 
UMSL kept applying pressure and after a one-out double in the bottom of the sixth the Tritons looked to take the lead. Madi Sundling followed with a single to center, but Daunhauer fired another perfect throw to home-plate, stopping a run from scoring.
 
Abbey Winstead led-off the top of the seventh with a double and Woodall came-in to pinch run. Woodall moved to third after a wild pitch. A strikeout followed, bringing Parker back to the plate. Parker crushed a fly ball to deep right-centerfield allowing Woodall to score the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly.
 
A single by Andee Powell followed while Jamie Tempel provided a two-out RBI triple to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. The two-out rally did not stop there as Daunhauer followed with another RBI triple, giving Wesleyan a 3-0 lead.
 
Brown shut the door in the seventh as the tying run came to plate, only to fly out to center. Brown scattered seven hits in recording her first shutout of the season. She also collected three strikeouts.
 
The Panthers will conclude their trip to the Sunshine State on Friday with two more games. First pitch against Western Oregon is scheduled for 8:30 AM CT with the contest against the University of Mary to start at 10:30 AM CT.
