Panthers Fall in Overtime to Yellow Jackets

CEDARVILLE, OH - The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's soccer team took Cedarville to the limit on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers suffered a 2-1 loss in overtime as the Yellow Jackets escaped with a Great Midwest Conference victory. Cedarville defeated Wesleyan 3-0 earlier this fall. It was the Panthers' third overtime match this season as they move to 1-1-1 in extra time.

The Yellow Jackets (9-2-6, 6-2-5 GMAC) came out in full force, firing 16 shots in the first 45 minutes. Nine of those shots were on goal. However, Lucas Daunhauer, who leads the nation in saves this season, made seven saves while the defense did the rest to continue aspirations of a shutout.

The Panthers (4-11-1, 2-10-1 GMAC) made the most of their opportunities in the first half as Austin Moore scored the first goal of the match in the 20th minute. The Cedarville defense got entangled with each other while Moore was in the right position. As the loose ball came free Moore was faced with an empty net and connected from 15-yards out.

Daunhauer remained steady in between the posts as Wesleyan maintained a 1-0 edge throughout most of the contest. With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Gui Fernandes found his opportunity for the equalizer. His shot sailed into the upper corner of the Panthers' net to tie the match.

As the match marched into extra time, the Yellow Jackets initial effort to end the contest was thwarted by Daunhauer who made his ninth save of the match in the 96th minute. Less than two minutes later Johnny Stevens ended the match with a backwards flick with his head.

The Panthers will return home on Tuesday for another match with Trevecca Nazarene. The contest at Panther Field is scheduled to start at 7:30PM.
