ODU Takes Down Wesleyan in Halloween Thriller

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Ohio Dominican University on Halloween night. ODU avenged a late September loss to Wesleyan at Panther Field.

The second edition of Panthers versus Panthers was at ODU's home turf as they were able to hold on for their fifth win of the season.  Wesleyan (4-10-1, 2-9-1 GMAC) had to play from behind again on Thursday evening as ODU scored the first goal of the match in the eighth minute. Alex Larzelere scored the opening tally as Dominican rode the slim 1-0 lead to the end of the first period.

ODU (5-9-2, 3-7-2 GMAC) took 10 shots, five at the Panthers' keeper Lucas Daunhauer. The sophomore keeper made three saves in the first 45 minute of the match. As the second period started Dominican incorporated a similar tactic in playing fast. Immediately after an offsides on the Panthers in the 59th minute, ODU went the other way to set-up Cameron Christian for the second goal of the match.

The 2-0 cushion was short lived as Anatoli Gishe broke free through the Dominican defense and put-away his fifth goal of the season. The Panthers again applied pressure offensively as Ben Protheroe missed-fired in the 74th minute. Still looking for the equalizer, Austin Moore saw his attempt to tie the match saved in the 77th minute.

Again, in the 80th minute, Jake Peveler's game-tying attempt was saved by Russell Montemarano. Ninety seconds later Protheroe found another open look  to square the match, but Montemarano save the night again.  ODU packed-in defensively in the final 30 minutes as they only attempt one shot in that span.

Peveler finished the match with four shots, one on goal. Overall, the Panthers took 14 shots, four on goal. Daunhauer collected three saves on the night.

The Panthers will remain in the greater-Columbus area to play Cedarville on Saturday. The match is scheduled to start at 1 PM.
