OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's soccer team finished the night as it started after 110 minutes with Walsh University. The Panthers played the Cavaliers to a 2-2 tie on Thursday evening.
The Panthers (4-6-1, 2-5-1 GMAC) fell behind early as the Cavaliers scored the first goal of the match. In the 12
th minute, Myles Cronwall converted the first score of the game. However, the lead was short lived as the Panthers responded five minutes later.
Selvin Hernandez fired a free kick into the box as the Walsh defense failed to deflect the pass,
Josh Barnett one touched it past keeper Ethan Burawa for the equalizer. The goal marked Barnett's second score of the season.
In the 21
st minute the Panthers took the lead on
Anatoli Gishe's fourth goal of the season. Off a deflection Gishe controlled the rebound and fired a shot through the lower left of the goal.
Lucas Daunhauer faced nine shots, seven on goal in the first 45 minutes. He had six saves in the period that allowed the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
The Panthers' defense did not break the rest of the way. Walsh was able to tie the game on a replayed penalty shot. After Daunhauer stopped the initial shot, the Cavs were awarded a redo after another penalty. The second attempt was good to tie the match.
Perhaps Wesleyan's best chance to score game in the final 20 minutes, where they converted a free kick from 40 yards away, however, it was ruled that replacement keeper Brett Ekperuoh was interfered with, wiping out the goal.
Jaxon Allard attempted to give the Panthers the edge in the 77
th minute as he controlled
Austin Moore's rebound and fired a missile into the left post that caromed out of the Walsh box.
As the game moved into an extra period, neither team could convert despite their chances. Daunhauer faced 34 shots, 15 on goal. The sophomore keeper made 13 saves on the night. Barnett finished with three shots, two on goal with one score.
The Panthers will host Malone University on Saturday at Great Midwest play continues. The match is scheduled to start at Panther Field at 2:30 PM.
