OWENSBORO, Ky. – In the second meeting in less than two weeks, the Kentucky Wesleyan College men's soccer team was defeated by Malone University on Thursday night.
The Panthers outshot the Pioneers 11-6 in the first half but the Pioneers were the only one able to find the back of the net. Goals in the 3rd and 15th minute allowed Malone to take a 2-0 lead to halftime.
Wesleyan evened things up 10 minutes into the second half with a pair of goals six minutes apart. After a scrum in front of the net, Julian Gonzalez tapped in his second goal of the season. In the 55th minute Ben Protheroe netted his first of the season after sending a shot through a screen of defenders.
Goalkeeper Lucas Daunhauer made three saves in a two minute span to preserve the 2-2 tie.
In the 65th minute, Malone scored the eventual game winning goal. The Panthers fired five shots in the final 10 minutes in addition to a pair of corner kicks but were unable to net another equalizer.
Wesleyan held the advantage in shots, 18-15, as Protheroe led all players with five shots. Julian Gonzalez tallied four while Preston Wright, Josh Barnett and Jacob Lensing recorded two apiece.
Daunhauer played all 90 minutes in net, making fives saves and allowing three goals.
The Panthers remain home this weekend, hosting Walsh on Saturday at 3:30 pm CT.
