LEBANON, Ill. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's soccer team couldn't overcome an early deficit in their season opener, dropping a 5-1 decision at McKendree University on Sunday evening. The Panthers fall to 0-1 on the season while the Bearcats remain undefeated at 2-0.
McKendree struck early in the 13th minute and went on to take a 3-0 lead to the half. The Bearcats held the advantage in shots, 8-3, at the break.
Kentucky Wesleyan found itself in a 5-0 deficit in the 59th minute. A few minutes later,
Madisyn Hunt fired a shot that hit the cross bar.
Breigh Haase pounced on the rebound and drew a foul in the box, earning a penalty kick. The junior found the back of the net to put the Panthers on the board.
The Bearcats held the advantage in shots at 28-9 and shots on goal at 18-4. Haase led the Panthers with three shots while
Madison Haycraft and
Kelsey Humphries each tallied one.
Taylor Rentchler played all 90 minutes in goal for the Panthers, stopping 13 shots.
The Panthers return home this week for their season home opener and Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener. Kentucky Wesleyan hosts Trevecca Nazarene at Panther Field with kickoff set for 8 pm CT.
