CANTON, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's soccer team went toe-to-toe with Malone University on Thursday afternoon, suffering a 2-1 double overtime loss in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest. The Panthers move to 0-5-1 overall and 1-4-0 in the G-MAC while the Pioneers improve to 1-5-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the conference.
Kentucky Wesleyan held the advantage in shots during the first half, outshooting the Pioneers seven to six. Malone opened the scoring in the 31st minute to take a 1-0 lead, a score that stayed put until halftime. The Panthers earned five corner kicks in the first frame but were unable to take advantage of any of them.
Victor Alhambra put the Panthers on the board in the 72nd minute with his first goal of the season. Alhambra took a pass from Kaelin Hildreth and found the back of the net from 25-yards out to knot the game at one.
During the final 18 minutes of play, the Pioneers fired off 11 shots, three of which were stopped by goalkeeper Jacob Stauffer. Kentucky Wesleyan had a corner kick in the final 30 seconds, but were unable to convert, sending the game to overtime.
The first overtime was tightly contested with each team tabbing two shots. Malone scored less than three minutes into the second overtime to take the 2-1 win.
Ben Protheroe led the Panthers with four shots, three of which were on goal. Alex Farmer and Alhambra tallied two shots a piece.
Stauffer made five saves while allowing two goals in 73:10 while Grant Allen stopped five shots in 29:30.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 23 as they take on the Cavaliers of Walsh University with kick off set for 12 pm CT in North Canton, Ohio.
