LEBANON, Ill. – After nearly a two week break, the Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team returned to action on Thursday afternoon, facing McKendree in a non-conference matchup. The Panthers dropped both games, 4-2 and 8-0, to fall to 13-9 on the season.
Game One: Kentucky Wesleyan 2 – McKendree 4
McKendree took a 3-0 lead entering the fifth inning after scoring one run each in the second, third and fourth. The Panthers were held hitless until the fifth inning when Mallory Nease blasted a fly ball over the left field fence for her second home run on the season.
The Bearcats tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fifth to extend its lead to three but Kentucky Wesleyan cut the deficit to two in the sixth. Maddie Dawson knocked a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a single from Jaylin Tidwell. With one out and runners on the corners, Courtney Lockwood hit a single through the left side to bring home Dawson. The Panthers held McKendree scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable to get on the board in the seventh, suffering the 4-2 loss.
Dawson, Tidwell, Lockwood and Nease each tabbed one hit with Lockwood and Nease driving in one run a piece. Autumn Grady went the distance and suffered her first loss of the season, falling to 5-1. Grady struck out five and allowed four runs off of 10 hits and one walk.
Game Two: Kentucky Wesleyan 0 – McKendree 8 (5 innings)
The Panthers bats went cold in game two, only tabbing two hits and not having a base runner until the fourth inning when Dawson knocked a single to right field. McKendree did its damage in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs off of six hits.
Dawson and Lockwood both went one-for-two in game two. Maci Brown suffered her third loss of the season, striking out four and allowing seven runs off of 11 hits in 3.1 innings pitched. In relief, Jessica Carmon struck out two and allowed one run.
Kentucky Wesleyan will host Kentucky State on Wednesday, March 22 for its 2017 home opener. The doubleheader is set to start at 1 pm CT.
