OWENSBORO, Ky. – Volleyball (3-3, 0-0) split the opening day of the 2026 Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational in the Woodward Health and Recreation Center. The Panthers fell 0-3 to Arkansas-Fort Smith (5-2,0-0) to open tournament play but finished off the schedule of games with a 3-0 sweep of their own over Davis & Elkins (0-6, 0-0).
MATCH ONE: Kentucky Wesleyan 3-0 Arkansas-Fort Smith (21-25, 22-25, 16-25)
SET ONE: Kentucky Wesleyan 21-25 Arkansas-Fort Smith
Kentucky Wesleyan and Arkansas-Fort Smith traded points early, with the Lions taking a 3-0 lead before the Panthers answered with a 3-1 run. The teams continued to battle throughout the set, with Kentucky Wesleyan eventually tying the score at 8-8. The Panthers stayed within striking distance late, cutting the deficit to 20-17 before Arkansas-Fort Smith closed the set on a 5-4 stretch to take the opener 25-21.
SET TWO: Kentucky Wesleyan 22-25 Arkansas-Fort Smith
The Lions again jumped out to an early advantage, taking a 3-0 lead, but Kentucky Wesleyan quickly responded and eventually took its first lead of the set at 7-6. The teams remained close throughout the middle portion of the frame, trading points and tying the score several times. With the match tied at 15-15, Arkansas-Fort Smith used a 6-2 run to take a 21-17 lead. The Panthers responded with three straight points to pull within one, but the Lions scored four of the final six points to secure the 25-22 victory.
SET THREE: Kentucky Wesleyan 16-25 Arkansas-Fort Smith
Arkansas-Fort Smith controlled the early portion of the third set, racing out to a 5-0 lead. Kentucky Wesleyan answered with three straight points and continued to chip away at the deficit, eventually pulling within one at 10-9. The Lions regained control with a 5-1 run and extended their advantage to 19-13. Kentucky Wesleyan was unable to mount another comeback as Arkansas-Fort Smith finished the match with a 25-16 win.
MATCH TWO: Kentucky Wesleyan 3-0 Davis & Elkins (25-20, 25-18, 25-16)
SET ONE: Kentucky Wesleyan 25-20 Davis & Elkins
Davis & Elkins took an early 5-4 lead before Kentucky Wesleyan answered with three straight points to move ahead 7-5. The Senators regained the lead at 9-6 and extended their advantage to 11-6, but the Panthers quickly erased the deficit.
Emmy Goering sparked the comeback with back-to-back aces as Kentucky Wesleyan scored four straight points to pull within one at 11-10. The teams continued to battle before the Panthers took control late. After Davis & Elkins led 17-15, Kentucky Wesleyan scored five consecutive points to take a 20-17 advantage. The Panthers maintained the lead from there, closing out the opening set 25-20 on a kill from
Kiersten Taylor.
SET TWO: Kentucky Wesleyan 25-18 Davis & Elkins
Kentucky Wesleyan opened the second set with a 3-2 lead before Davis & Elkins briefly moved in front 4-3. The Panthers responded with three straight points to regain the lead and continued to build momentum. Leading 8-6, Kentucky Wesleyan scored six consecutive points to push its advantage to 14-6. Davis & Elkins cut the deficit to 14-10, but the Panthers answered with another three-point stretch to make it 17-10. The Senators managed to pull within four at 20-16, but Kentucky Wesleyan scored five of the final seven points to take the set 25-18.
Hadley Wolfe recorded three kills during the set, including the final point.
SET THREE: Kentucky Wesleyan 25-16 Davis & Elkins
The Panthers carried their momentum into the third set, turning an early 3-3 tie into a 7-3 lead with four consecutive points. Davis & Elkins answered to cut the deficit to 7-5, but Kentucky Wesleyan continued to apply pressure. A service ace from
Grace Lewis and another ace from Goering helped the Panthers extend their lead to 13-6. Kentucky Wesleyan remained in control throughout the remainder of the set, pushing its advantage to 19-8 before the Senators made a late push. Davis & Elkins scored four straight points to cut the deficit to 19-12, but the Panthers responded with three consecutive points of their own. Kentucky Wesleyan closed out the sweep 25-16 on a block from
Mackenzie Bristol and Goering.
