OWENSBORO, Ky. – Volleyball (3-5, 0-0) concluded the 2026 Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday. The Panthers fell 0-3 to McKendree and 1-3 to Illinois Springfield to finish the tournament.
MATCH ONE: Kentucky Wesleyan 3-0 McKendree (21-25, 18-25, 25-27)
SET ONE: Kentucky Wesleyan 21-25 McKendree
McKendree jumped out to a 9-3 lead early in the opening set before Kentucky Wesleyan began to chip away at the deficit. The Panthers pulled within two at 13-11 after a service ace from De Sevilla-Acosta and kills from
Emmy Goering, but McKendree answered to maintain its advantage. Kentucky Wesleyan continued to battle, tying the set at 15-15 before taking a 16-15 lead following a block from
Mackenzie Bristol. The lead changed hands again before McKendree moved in front 19-17 and eventually extended its advantage to 23-19. The Panthers cut the deficit to two late, but McKendree closed out the set 25-21.
SET TWO: Kentucky Wesleyan 18-25 McKendree
Kentucky Wesleyan started the second set quickly, building a 4-2 lead before McKendree responded with a three-point run. The Panthers regained the lead at 5-4 and later held an 8-6 advantage, but McKendree answered with a four-point stretch to take an 8-6 lead. Kentucky Wesleyan then took control with a five-point run, highlighted by three service aces from
Grace Lewis, to move ahead 12-8. McKendree quickly erased the deficit and eventually took a 17-14 lead. The Panthers remained within striking distance, cutting the deficit to 22-17, but McKendree scored three of the final four points to take the set 25-18.
SET THREE: Kentucky Wesleyan 25-27 McKendree
The third set featured a back-and-forth battle from the opening points, with Kentucky Wesleyan taking an early 4-1 lead before McKendree responded. The Panthers held an 11-7 advantage midway through the set and later pushed ahead 15-13 following back-to-back kills from Bristol. McKendree answered with a three-point run to take a 16-15 lead, but Kentucky Wesleyan battled back to tie the set at 17-17. The two sides continued to trade points, with the score eventually tied at 21-21. Kentucky Wesleyan moved ahead 23-22 and reached set point at 25-24, but McKendree answered with three straight points to complete the sweep with a 27-25 victory.
MATCH TWO: Kentucky Wesleyan 1-3 Illinois Springfield (25-19, 22-25, 15-25, 17-25)
SET ONE: Kentucky Wesleyan 25-19 Illinois Springfield
Illinois Springfield jumped out to an 8-3 lead before Kentucky Wesleyan began to settle in. The Panthers slowly chipped away at the deficit before a four-point run, highlighted by kills from
Abigail Butterworth and an ace from
Ella Thomas, tied the set at 11-11. KWC continued to build momentum, scoring nine consecutive points to turn a 12-11 deficit into a 20-12 advantage. Goering and Butterworth each recorded two kills during the stretch, while
Mackenzie Bristol added a kill and
Layla McAuliffe recorded an ace. Illinois Springfield responded with a late run of its own, but the Panthers maintained control and closed out the set 25-19.
SET TWO: Kentucky Wesleyan 22-25 Illinois Springfield
The second set remained close throughout, with neither side holding more than a two-point advantage until the final stretch. KWC held a 12-11 lead before Illinois Springfield answered with three straight points to move ahead 14-12. The Panthers continued to battle, eventually tying the set at 15-15 on a Bristol kill. The Prairie Stars regained the lead and pushed ahead 21-18, but KWC responded with three consecutive points, including kills from
Hadley Wolfe and
Kami Parlin, to cut the deficit to 21-20. Illinois Springfield scored the next three points, however, and finished the set 25-22 to even the match.
SET THREE: Kentucky Wesleyan 15-25 Illinois Springfield
Kentucky Wesleyan took an early 6-4 lead before Illinois Springfield responded with a 6-0 run to move ahead 10-6. The Panthers trimmed the deficit to 10-9, but the Prairie Stars answered with five consecutive points to take a 15-10 advantage. Illinois Springfield continued to pull away as KWC struggled to generate the same offensive rhythm from the opening two sets. The Prairie Stars closed the set on a 6-2 run to take it 25-15 and move within one set of the match victory.
SET FOUR: Kentucky Wesleyan 17-25 Illinois Springfield
Illinois Springfield carried its momentum into the fourth set, building an early 6-3 advantage. Kentucky Wesleyan answered to take a 6-5 lead, but the Prairie Stars quickly regained control with four straight points. KWC stayed within striking distance at 12-9 before Illinois Springfield used another four-point run to extend its advantage to 16-9. The Panthers battled back to within 19-13 and later 23-16, but the deficit proved too large to overcome as Illinois Springfield closed the match with a 25-17 victory.
