NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Kentucky Wesleyan men's and women's tennis faced off against the IU Southeast Grenadiers yesterday to open the fall season. The Panters walked away with wins for each respective program. The men swept the hosts 7-0, while the women captured a 4-3 come-from-behind victory.
The men's team opened the day by winning the doubles point.
Daniel Lang and Moe Mokete earned a 6-1 victory over Elijah Brosmer and Connor Critchfield to begin play while
Kade Eber and Pon Van Vessem completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win over DJ Hall and Paxton Evitts.
Kentucky Wesleyan continued its dominance in singles, beginning with Mokete's 6-2, 6-1 victory. Middleton followed with a 6-3, 3-3 result before Lang earned a 6-4, 6-3 win.
Nick Lenz added a 6-0, 6-1 victory, while
Marcos Tiferes completed the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Ferrandis also earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory to give the Panthers the 7-0 shutout.
The women's team faced a much closer contest, but Kentucky Wesleyan came away with the 4-3 victory. Kentucky Wesleyan took two of the three doubles matches, with the No. 2 match finishing first as Indiana Southeast's Libby Banet and Kate Halbig defeated
Angela Ho and
Anna Bongardt 6-4. The Panthers answered with
Kiley DeMoss and
Manon Girard earning a 6-1 victory over Libby Banet and Eva Ellis, followed by
Leila Hani and
Maddie Meyer defeating Anellah Trujillo and Sidney Burton 6-3.
Indiana Southeast picked up the first two singles points to take a 2-1 lead, with Maci Vaughn defeating
Anna Bongardt 6-1, 6-2 and Kate Halbig edging
Maddie Meyer 6-3, 4-6, 7-4. Kentucky Wesleyan responded with
Kiley DeMoss defeating Eva Ellis 6-0, 6-2, followed by
Leila Hani's 6-1, 6-2 win over Anellah Trujillo.
With the match still undecided, Kentucky Wesleyan secured the team victory with two more singles wins. Libby Banet defeated
Manon Girard 7-5, 7-6 before
Jeanine Sharp closed out the competition with a three-set victory over Sidney Burton, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.
