OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan men's soccer team gave the University of Findley its first loss of the season on Saturday. Wesleyan upended the Oilers 2-1 at Panther Field thanks to a second half goal from
Ivan Juarez. The win is the Panthers' first in Great Midwest competition and the second of the season.
Like on Thursday the Panthers (2-2, 1-1 G-MAC) came out aggressive and pushed the pace. The Oilers (4-1, 1-1 G-MAC) did not have enough time to adjust as
Mathias Jensen curled a pass over the top of the defense to
Braeden Myers-Curry. Myers-Curry ran past the Oilers last line of defense and converted a goal into the right side of the net.
The Panthers held a 1-0 advantage for over 20 minutes before Tim Middleham had a one-on-one opportunity in the 23
rd minute. His shot dribbled past a diving
Matteo Graniero for the equalizer. The matched stayed a 1-1 into intermission. The Oilers out-shot the Panthers 4-2 in the opening half and 12-8 for the match.
In the second half each team had chances to take the lead.
Carter Ford saw his shot in the 53
rd minute saved before crossing the center goal-line. Ford and
Brody Peters saw their shots in the 64
th and 65
thminute fly off target. Then in the 67
th minute,
Ivan Juarez side tapped
Harrison Davey's pass into the net for the game-winner. Davey's pass just missed
Mattie McNally attempting to do the same thing, but Juarez, not giving up on the play was free in front of the middle of the net and took advantage.
The Oilers' shots down the stretch were not on target and the Panthers' defense continued to shine. Ford finished with three shots, two on goal. Graniero made one save to record the win.
The Panthers will travel to Crestview Hills, Kentucky on Thursday night to play Thomas More. The match at Republic Bank Field is scheduled for 6:30PM.
