Panthers Drop Home Opener to William Jewell

OWENSBORO, Ky. – Kentucky Wesleyan Football (0-2, 0-0 G-MAC) fell to William Jewell (1-0, 0-0 GLVC) 14-35 Saturday evening inside Steele Stadium.

The Panthers had early opportunities, but William Jewell capitalized on two turnovers to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Kentucky Wesleyan opened the game by forcing an interception and moved into William Jewell territory, but a 32-yard field goal attempt came up short. After another interception by the Panthers, William Jewell's Xavier Winston hauled in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Jake Shaffer with 6:53 remaining in the quarter.

Kentucky Wesleyan continued to battle in the second quarter and eventually took control of the game. William Jewell added a 26-yard field goal early in the period before the Panthers responded with two touchdowns. Tyler Thompson connected with Brant Williams on a 36-yard touchdown pass with 3:41 remaining, and Dominick Hollis put Kentucky Wesleyan ahead with a 2-yard touchdown run with 31 seconds left in the half.

The Panthers carried a 14-10 advantage into halftime and held the lead throughout most of the third quarter. William Jewell eventually pulled within one with a 15-yard field goal late in the quarter, setting up a 14-13 score heading into the final period.

William Jewell took over in the fourth quarter, scoring three touchdowns to pull away. Michael Clark opened the quarter with a 55-yard touchdown run, while Hunter Bailey added a 25-yard touchdown reception later in the period. Carson Forrest capped off the scoring with a 24-yard touchdown catch with 2:52 remaining.
