A Sunday Split

OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team split Sunday's double-header against Fairmont State University. The Panthers fell in the day's opener 10-3, but won the finale 12-5. Evan Oakley, a little under the weather, put together another strong performance to win his third game of the season.

In the opener, Fairmont State scored three in the second and four in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. Jacob Riegel homered in the sixth to get the Panthers on the board while Luke Renfrow and Liam Hutson provided RBI singles in the seventh. Hutson finished the game three for four with an RBI.

In the finale, the bats came alive for Oakley on the mound. After two scoreless innings, Hutson broke the tie in the third inning with a solo shot over the right-centerfield wall. In the fourth inning, Rhett Dysholm scored on Logan Molnar's double. Molnar scored on a wild pitch to make it a 3-0 game. Riegel followed with a single before Hutson, who again cleared the bags with a home run over the rightfield fence.

FSU made things interesting in the fifth with two runs, cutting into the Panthers' lead to 5-2. The Panthers then busted the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Davin Yates drove in a run with a double. Both Dysholm and Elijah Stockton added to the hit parade with RBI singles.

Oakley picked up the win with 5.1 innings of work allowing two runs on six hits and five strikeouts. David Castleberry cleaned up the rest to earn a save. Dysholm finished three for four with an RBI. Ellis Hurt was three for five with a RBI. Hutson continued his strong play with a two for four game with two home runs and three RBIs.

The new season is upon the Panthers as they will host the first weekend of Great Midwest Conference action on Saturday. Wesleyan will host Northwood at Panther Park. First pitch is scheduled for 12PM.
